2nd Ed., p.76: It was these Insidiae who brought their barghests and their blood magic to this continent, to Maderlav. None knew how they’d unraveled such dastardly secrets, but they realized something that had driven Elsie to tears: by provoking children through poison into a frenzy of fear that ended not in beasthood but in blood and death, the Insidiae could seize total control of the families of those they tormented. Their will, their being, and most importantly, their magic. One day it was someone who’d gone missing, and the next, it was a Insidiae, overtaking a family, one by one, possessing each last link in the chain.
Replaced With:
The Insidiae used this tenancy as a check against renegade politicians and power-hungry dictators. One tied by bloodlines to a leader would be designated as the balance, a kinman who would give their blood so that the Insidiae could rein in the relative who reneged on promises. It was a reminder of the responsibility of leaders, and a promise that their family—with the help of Insidiae—would hold them accountable.
Why it was replaced:
Clarity of intention. Many thanks to everyone who helped run tease this out.
